History of Fort Santa Isabel
Constructed in 1667 under the Augustinian Recollects led by Father Antonio de Jesus and completed around 1738, Fort Santa Isabel was built to protect the settlement of Taytay, then the capital of Calamianes Province, against maritime raids. Built with coral blocks and lime, it features a quadrilateral plan with bastions at the corners. It is considered one of the most intact Spanish-era forts in Palawan and was declared a National Historical Landmark.
Culture & Context
The fort is a significant example of Spanish colonial military architecture in Palawan and a symbol of Taytay's role as a former provincial capital. It reflects the heritage of the Augustinian Recollect mission and remains a focal point for local heritage appreciation and cultural tourism in northern Palawan.
