History of Fort Denison
Originally known as Rock Island and later Pinchgut, the island was used as a punishment site for convicts in the early colonial period. Construction of the fort began in 1841 and was completed in 1857 in response to fears of foreign attack, using convict labour. It features Australia's only Martello tower, modelled on towers used to defend against Napoleonic invasion, with gun emplacements and barracks. It served as a harbour defence facility and later as a navigation aid with its lighthouse.
Culture & Context
The island is known to the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as Mat-te-wan-ye and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register and National Heritage List. It represents colonial military architecture and convict heritage, and is an iconic landmark within Sydney Harbour that contributes to the cultural identity and historic interpretation of the harbour for visitors.
