History of Falls Creek
Falls Creek developed from the late 1940s following the establishment of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, which provided road access to the Bogong High Plains. A ski lodge was built in 1948 and the area was declared an alpine resort. It has since grown into Victoria's largest alpine resort, with Rocky Valley Dam (1970s) forming Rocky Valley Lake as part of the hydro scheme.
Culture & Context
Located in the Australian Alps within Alpine National Park, the resort is part of Victoria's alpine recreation culture and is significant for winter sports, alpine education and year-round mountain recreation. The surrounding Bogong High Plains are valued for their alpine ecology and as a traditional summer recreation area.
