About Erra Matti Dibbalu
Erra Matti Dibbalu, also known as the Red Sand Hills, is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument located between Visakhapatnam and Bheemunipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The site features striking red sand dunes formed by sea regression, wind and monsoon activity over thousands of years. Spread over about 20 acres along the Bay of Bengal coast, its undulating red and orange mounds, gullies and contrasting green vegetation create a distinctive desert-like landscape rare on India's east coast.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect an open, undulating landscape of bright red and orange sand mounds, ridges and gullies interspersed with patches of green scrub and casuarina. The dunes rise up to about 30 meters and offer views of the Bay of Bengal coastline. There are no built structures inside; the experience is primarily walking on sandy trails, observing the natural geological formations, and photography. The site is exposed with little shade and is best explored on foot during daylight hours.
