History of Eran Archaeological Site
Eran was known in ancient times as Erakina and shows continuous habitation from the Chalcolithic period. It flourished under the Gupta Empire (4th-6th century CE) as an important town and religious center. The site contains some of the earliest surviving Hindu temples in India, including Gupta-era Vishnu and Varaha temples. Inscriptions found here, including those of Samudragupta, Bhanugupta (510 CE) and Toramana, are key sources for Gupta and Huna history, coinage and early temple architecture.
Culture & Context
Eran is a significant early center of Vaishnavism, with temples dedicated to Vishnu and his incarnations Varaha and Narasimha. The large Varaha image and associated inscriptions reflect the development of Hindu iconography and temple worship in the Gupta period. The site remains a protected heritage complex illustrating the evolution of Hindu temple architecture from simple flat-roofed shrines to more elaborate forms.
