History of Elwood Beach
Elwood was originally low-lying swampland and the Elwood Swamp, reclaimed and developed for residential use in the early 20th century. The foreshore was developed as a public recreation reserve in the 1920s and 1930s, with the Elwood Life Saving Club established in 1920 to patrol the beach. The area reflects interwar suburban expansion of Melbourne's bayside suburbs.
Culture & Context
Elwood Beach is a significant community recreation area for the City of Port Phillip, used for beach culture, outdoor fitness, and family gatherings. It forms part of the continuous Port Phillip Bay foreshore parklands valued for public open space and coastal leisure.
