History of Elizabeth Quay
Elizabeth Quay was developed as part of the Perth Waterfront project on land reclaimed around the former Esplanade Reserve and The Esplanade. Construction began in 2014 and the precinct was officially opened on 29 January 2016. It was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee. The project reconnected the Perth CBD to the Swan River, restoring a historic link that had been separated by road and development.
Culture & Context
The precinct is located on the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), an area of significance to the Whadjuk Noongar people. Public art and interpretive elements, including the Spanda sculpture inspired by Noongar culture, reflect local heritage. The quay functions as a contemporary cultural and community gathering place for festivals, markets and public events in central Perth.
