History of Elephant Falls
The falls were named Elephant Falls by the British due to a large rock at the base that resembled an elephant. The rock was destroyed and washed away in the great earthquake of 1897. The original Khasi name Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew refers to the three successive falls.
Culture & Context
The waterfall retains its Khasi name Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, reflecting local Khasi heritage and the traditional description of the falls as three steps. It is a prominent natural landmark in Khasi Hills and a well-known stop on the Shillong to Cherrapunji tourist circuit.
