History of Dr Graham's Homes
Founded in 1900 by Rev. Dr John Anderson Graham, a Scottish missionary of the Church of Scotland, as St Andrew's Colonial Homes to provide a home and education for Anglo-Indian and disadvantaged children. Established on land leased and later purchased on the slopes above Kalimpong, it grew into a large self-sufficient community with cottages, school, hospital, farm and workshops, reflecting early 20th-century missionary and colonial educational initiatives in the Darjeeling Himalayas.
Culture & Context
The institution represents a continuing educational and community heritage of Kalimpong, known for its cottage system, multicultural student community and colonial architecture. The Katherine Graham Memorial Chapel and annual traditions reflect its Christian foundation while serving students from diverse backgrounds, contributing to Kalimpong's identity as an educational centre.
