About Donsol Whale Shark Interaction
Donsol Whale Shark Interaction is a regulated marine wildlife tourism activity based at the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center in Barangay Dancalan, Donsol, Sorsogon. Donsol is recognized as the Whale Shark Capital of the World due to seasonal aggregations of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) locally called butanding. Visitors join guided boat tours to observe and snorkel with whale sharks in open waters under strict interaction guidelines managed by the local tourism office.
Visitors guide
Visitors report to the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center for registration and a mandatory briefing, then board a small outrigger boat with a licensed Boat Interaction Officer and spotter. Boats cruise coastal waters of Donsol Bay to locate whale sharks. When spotted, visitors may enter the water to snorkel and observe the animals at a regulated distance. The center has briefing halls, waiting areas, and equipment rental. The experience is seasonal and sightings are not guaranteed as it involves wild animals.
