History of Don Chedi Monument
The monument commemorates the elephant duel in 1592 (1593 in some chronologies) when King Naresuan of Ayutthaya defeated the Burmese crown prince, an event regarded as securing Ayutthaya's independence. The present chedi was identified and restored in the 20th century, with a new chedi constructed over the remains and officially inaugurated in 1952, later designated as a historic site.
Culture & Context
The site is a revered national memorial honoring King Naresuan, widely respected in Thai history. It serves as a focal point for remembrance and local identity, hosting the annual Don Chedi Memorial Festival in January with ceremonies, cultural performances, historical reenactments, and a market fair.
