Digboi Oil Centenary Museum

The Digboi Oil Centenary Museum is an industry heritage museum located in Digboi, Tinsukia District, Assam, near the Digboi Refinery operated by Indian Oil Corporation Limited. Established to commemorate 100 years of refining at Asia's first oil refinery, it documents the history of oil discovery in Digboi since 1889. The museum displays vintage machinery, photographs, models, documents and equipment illustrating the evolution of oil exploration and refining in India.

Visitors can expect a small, well-maintained museum complex near the Digboi Refinery showcasing the history of oil in Assam. Inside are galleries with black-and-white photographs, documents, working models of oil wells and refinery units, vintage drilling equipment, machinery and tools used in early exploration. Outdoor exhibits include old equipment and machinery. The setting is quiet and educational, with guided explanations about Asia's first oil well and refinery.

Digboi is the site of the first oil well in Asia, drilled in 1889, and Asia's first oil refinery, commissioned in 1901 by the Assam Oil Company, now operated by Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The refinery has been in continuous operation for over a century. The Digboi Oil Centenary Museum was established in 1999-2001 to commemorate 100 years of the refinery and to preserve the industrial heritage of India's petroleum industry, including its role during World War II.

The museum represents the industrial and cultural identity of Digboi as the Oil City of Assam. It preserves the heritage of India's earliest petroleum industry and serves as an educational centre highlighting the contribution of Digboi to India's energy history and the local community's long association with oil exploration and refining.
