History of Devi Dol
Devi Dol was constructed in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, the chief queen of Ahom King Swargadeo Siva Singha (reigned 1714-1744). It is part of the Sivasagar temple trio built on the banks of the Sivasagar Tank (Borpukhuri), which was excavated by the Ahoms. The temple represents the mature Ahom architectural style using brick, stone and indigenous techniques and reflects the Ahom patronage of Hindu traditions during the 18th century.
Culture & Context
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is an important Shakti shrine in Upper Assam. It holds religious significance for Hindu devotees and is a focal point during Durga Puja and Navratri. Together with Sivadol and Vishnudol, it symbolizes the Ahom era's cultural synthesis and remains a central heritage and pilgrimage site in Sivasagar.
