History of Deeg Fort
Deeg Fort was built around the early 18th century by Maharaja Badan Singh, founder of the Bharatpur State, and later expanded by his son Maharaja Suraj Mal around 1730. It served as the first capital of the Jat kingdom and functioned as a fortified summer retreat and administrative center. The fort withstood several sieges and served as a refuge during invasions, particularly from the Mughal Empire. The palace remained in use until the early 1970s before being preserved as a monument.
Culture & Context
Deeg Fort represents the only Hindu-style palace in North India and showcases a perfect blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. It stands as a testament to the strategic military and aesthetic vision of the Jat rulers during the 18th century. The annual Deeg festival held in September is a significant cultural event associated with the place.
