History of Dargo
Dargo was established in the 1860s during the Victorian gold rush following gold discoveries along the Dargo River and nearby Crooked River goldfields. It developed as a supply town for miners with hotels, stores and mining infrastructure. The Dargo Hotel and other heritage buildings reflect its gold-mining past, and the nearby Grant Historic Area preserves remains of a former gold-mining township.
Culture & Context
Dargo is recognised as a traditional high-country town representing Gippsland's pastoral and gold-mining heritage. It maintains a strong high-country and bush culture associated with cattle grazing, river life and alpine recreation, and serves as a community hub for surrounding rural and high-plains areas.
