About Daly Waters Aviation Complex
The Daly Waters Aviation Complex is a heritage-listed aviation precinct at Daly Waters Airfield on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, about 600 km south of Darwin. Established in the mid-1920s and expanded in 1930 with a Qantas hangar, it was Australia's first international airfield and a key refuelling stop on the London to Australia air route. It later served as an important Royal Australian Air Force base during World War II and retains its historic hangar and associated structures.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect an open, remote outback airfield setting with a historic 1930 Qantas hangar, interpretive signage, and remnants of the early international aerodrome and World War II base. The complex is largely outdoors with the hangar as the focal point, surrounded by flat savanna, airstrip and Stuart Highway roadhouse settlement. Visitors can walk around the precinct, view the hangar exterior and interior displays where accessible, read history panels and photograph the heritage structures and airfield.
