History of Coogee Beach
The Coogee area is traditionally associated with the Bidjigal people. The name Coogee is commonly derived from an Aboriginal word koojah or kudgee meaning 'smelly place' referring to decaying seaweed. European settlement expanded from the 1830s, and Coogee developed as a popular seaside resort in the late 19th century with the Coogee Aquarium and Pier (1887), Coogee Baths (1880s) and Wylie's Baths (1907). The Coogee Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1907, among the earliest in Australia.
