History of Con Son Pagoda
Con Son Pagoda, originally named Thien Tu Phuc Tu, dates back to the Tran Dynasty and was expanded in the Le Dynasty. It became a leading center of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism under the third patriarch Huyen Quang (1254-1334). The site is closely linked to scholar-official Tran Nguyen Dan and his grandson, national hero Nguyen Trai, who lived and worked at Con Son. The pagoda and surrounding relic complex is recognized as a Special National Relic of Vietnam.
Culture & Context
The pagoda is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site and a center of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism, the Vietnamese Zen tradition founded by King Tran Nhan Tong. It hosts major religious festivals, notably the Con Son - Kiep Bac Spring and Autumn Festivals, with rituals, processions and cultural performances that reflect Vietnamese Buddhist and folk traditions.
