History of Collingwood Children's Farm
Established in 1979 by a community committee on land formerly farmed by the Abbotsford Convent to provide inner-city children with farm experience. The site preserves part of the historic convent farm on the Yarra River floodplain, which was used for agriculture since the 19th century, and continues as a community-managed working farm and educational resource.
Culture & Context
Significant as a long-running community urban agriculture and environmental education initiative in inner Melbourne. It promotes sustainable farming, food education and connection to rural life for urban families, and forms part of the Abbotsford Convent precinct, a major cultural and heritage precinct on the Yarra River.
