History of Coburg Lake Reserve
Coburg Lake was created in 1915 by damming the Merri Creek to provide a water supply reserve for the former City of Coburg. The surrounding land was later developed and landscaped as a public recreational reserve, with park facilities, lake improvements and revegetation undertaken through the 20th century to serve the growing northern suburbs.
Culture & Context
The reserve lies on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, for whom the Merri Creek (Merri Merri) corridor holds long-standing cultural significance. Today it functions as a valued community open space for recreation, family gatherings and connection to the creek parklands.
