History of Chunar Fort
Chunar Fort has ancient origins traditionally linked to early rulers and is believed to have been occupied since the Mauryan period. It gained prominence under Sher Shah Suri who captured it in 1532, and was contested by Humayun and later held by Akbar. The fort's strategic position on the Ganges made it an important military stronghold. Under the British it was used as a depot and prison. The fort is built of Chunar sandstone and contains structures from different periods including Sonwa Mandap and a deep well.
Culture & Context
The fort is associated with local legends including those of King Sahadeva, sage Bhartrihari who is said to have lived and meditated here, and the folk heroes Alha and Udal. Sonwa Mandap is linked to folklore about Princess Sonwa. The fort's sandstone has been historically quarried for construction, and the site remains a cultural landmark for the Chunar-Mirzapur region overlooking the sacred Ganges River.
