History of Chomu Palace
Founded in 1550 by Rao Gopalji, 4th son of Raja Prithviraj Singhji I of Jaipur, as Chomugarh Fort. Initially built as a strategic military fortification with 5-meter thick outer walls to house armies and ward off invaders. The structure evolved from fort to palace over nearly 350 years, witnessing architectural influences from successive ruling monarchies during the transition completed in the late 18th century.
Culture & Context
Represents a collateral branch of the Samode fiefdom and showcases the architectural evolution influenced by Rajput, Mughal, and European aesthetics over three and a half centuries. Designed according to Indian Vastushastra philosophy, the palace reflects the grandeur and lifestyle of Rajput royalty.
