History of Chola Gangam Lake
Chola Gangam Lake (Cholagangam) was constructed in the 11th century CE by Rajendra Chola I (reigned 1012-1044 CE) after his successful expedition to the Ganges. The reservoir was created to commemorate the bringing of Ganges water and to supply water to the new capital city Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Contemporary inscriptions describe it as Cholagangam and note its massive scale with elaborate embankments and channels, representing advanced Chola water management.
Culture & Context
The lake is culturally associated with the Chola capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the nearby Brihadisvara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Great Living Chola Temples. It reflects the Chola tradition of creating large temple-centered settlements with integrated water systems and remains a revered historic water body for the local community.
