History of Chitralekha Udyan
Chitralekha Udyan was established in 1906 by Mr. Cole, the then Deputy Commissioner of Tezpur, and was originally named Cole Park. It was later renovated and restored in 1996 by Deputy Commissioner M.G.V.K. Bhanu, who added water bodies, sculptures and landscaping features. The park preserves colonial-era planning while incorporating local cultural elements.
Culture & Context
The park is named after Chitralekha, the talented artist and companion of Princess Usha in the legend of Banasura, Aniruddha and Usha associated with Tezpur, historically known as Sonitpur. Sculptures and installations in the park reference this legend, which is central to Tezpur's cultural identity.
