History of Chiang Mai Zoo
The zoo originated from a private collection started by American missionary Harold Mason Young in 1952 on Huay Kaew Road. The Chiang Mai Municipality developed the site and it was officially opened as Chiang Mai Zoo in 1974 under the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, becoming northern Thailand's first and largest zoo and a center for wildlife conservation and education.
Culture & Context
Serves as a major educational, conservation and family recreation institution for northern Thailand, known for its role in wildlife breeding programs and for formerly housing giant pandas on loan, which became a cultural symbol for the city.
