History of Chengalpattu Fort Ruins
The fort is attributed to the Vijayanagara Empire and later controlled by the Madurai Nayaks. In the 18th century it was contested by the French and the British due to its strategic position near the Coromandel Coast and its proximity to trade routes. The British eventually took control and used it as a military garrison before it fell into ruin.
