History of Chelsea Beach
Chelsea developed as a seaside suburb in the late 19th and early 20th centuries following the extension of the railway to Frankston. The foreshore and Chelsea Pier have long served as a recreational focus for Port Phillip Bay, with Bicentennial Park established in 1988 to mark Australia's Bicentenary and preserve the coastal reserve for public use.
Culture & Context
Chelsea Beach is a key community recreation area for the City of Kingston, valued for family beach culture, fishing from the pier, and foreshore gatherings. It forms part of the continuous Port Phillip Bay beach landscape that is central to Melbourne's bayside lifestyle.
