History of Chapel Street
Chapel Street was surveyed in the 1850s and named after a chapel built on the corner of Chapel Street and Toorak Road. It developed rapidly after the Prahran Market opened in 1864 and with the arrival of the railway in the 1860s, becoming the main commercial spine for Prahran and South Yarra. Victorian and Edwardian shopfronts, arcades and former town hall buildings reflect its 19th and early 20th century growth as a suburban retail centre.
Culture & Context
Chapel Street is one of Melbourne's most recognised fashion, dining and entertainment precincts and a long-standing social hub for inner southeast Melbourne. It is known for its mix of independent boutiques, hospitality venues, LGBTQIA+ friendly nightlife, and the Prahran Market as a community food hub, representing Melbourne's contemporary retail and cafe culture within a heritage streetscape.
