About Chandratal Lake
Chandratal Lake, also known as Moon Lake due to its crescent shape, is a high-altitude natural lake situated at approximately 4,270 meters in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Located near Kunzum Pass and accessible via Batal, it is a designated Ramsar wetland site surrounded by the Chandratal Wildlife Sanctuary. The lake is seasonally accessible from mid-June to early October and is a significant destination for high-altitude trekking and nature observation.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a remote high-altitude environment with no mobile connectivity or permanent facilities directly at the lake. Access requires a 1-2 km walk from the designated parking area, as vehicles are not permitted at the shoreline. Camping is strictly prohibited on the lakeshore to protect the fragile Ramsar wetland ecosystem; regulated campsites are located 2-3 km away. Visitors can walk a 3-4 km perimeter trail, observe changing water colors, and experience stargazing in a zero-waste zone where all trash must be carried out.
