About Chadwick Falls
Chadwick Falls is a natural waterfall located in the Summer Hill forest reserve near Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1586 meters, the cascade drops roughly 67 to 86 meters through a deep gorge surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests. Historically known as Chidku Jhaar, it is one of Shimla's oldest tourist attractions, offering a serene natural setting distinct from the main town center.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a moderate trek of approximately 45 to 60 minutes through shaded deodar forests to reach the base viewing area. The waterfall plunges vertically into a rocky stream bed, creating significant spray during the monsoon season when water volume is highest. The trail features natural switchbacks and tree roots, requiring proper footwear. There are no commercial stalls or facilities on the trail itself, and mobile reception may be unreliable within the gorge.

History of Chadwick Falls
Originally known locally as Chidku Jhaar, the name was anglicized to Chadwick during British colonial rule due to pronunciation difficulties. Some accounts attribute the name to a scientist named Chadwick who reportedly died at the falls. The site has been a recognized tourist attraction since the British era development of Summer Hill as a residential area.
