History of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort
Bukit Merah Lake (Tasik Bukit Merah) is an artificial reservoir completed in 1906 during the British colonial period to provide irrigation for rice fields in Kerian District. It is regarded as the oldest man-made lake in Malaysia. The laketown resort was later developed on its shore as an integrated tourism project to promote domestic tourism in northern Perak.
Culture & Context
The resort hosts Orang Utan Island, a conservation, research and education centre for the endangered orang utan, which serves as a wildlife education attraction for visitors. The lake and surrounding area remain important for local agriculture and recreation.
