About Broome Bird Observatory
Broome Bird Observatory is a research and education centre on the shores of Roebuck Bay, about 25 kilometres from Broome in Western Australia's Kimberley region. Operated by BirdLife Australia since 1988, it overlooks extensive tidal mudflats that support one of Australia's most important migratory shorebird sites. The observatory offers guided birdwatching tours, accommodation and interpretive displays focused on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and Roebuck Bay's Ramsar-listed wetlands.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a remote coastal setting on Roebuck Bay's pindan cliffs overlooking vast tidal mudflats and mangroves. The site includes a visitor centre with interpretive displays, library and shop, shaded campgrounds and simple accommodation, and bird hides and walking tracks along Crab Creek. Guided tours led by expert guides provide close views of migratory shorebirds, bush birds and raptors using telescopes and binoculars. The experience is low-key and nature-focused, with emphasis on observation, education and research.
