About Birdsville Track
The Birdsville Track is a 517 km historic unsealed outback stock route linking Marree in South Australia to Birdsville in Queensland. Established in the 1880s for droving cattle to the Marree railhead, it traverses gibber plains, sand dunes and desert wetlands of the Tirari and Sturt Stony Deserts. Today it is a renowned 4WD touring route noted for its pastoral heritage, remote desert landscapes and isolation.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a remote unsealed gravel, clay and sand track through arid desert country with vast gibber plains, sand dunes, claypans and occasional wetlands. The route is marked by historic ruins, old wells, the Mungerannie Hotel roadhouse, and expansive views of the Tirari Desert and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre basin. There are limited services, basic campgrounds and rest areas, and long distances between fuel stops. Travel is by high-clearance 4WD and requires self-sufficiency.
