History of Big Blade
The blade was installed in 2016 to mark the Snowtown Wind Farm, developed in stages from 2008. The wind farm comprises more than 100 turbines and was at the time the second largest in South Australia, contributing significantly to the state's renewable energy generation. The monument was erected as a community landmark to recognise the project's economic and energy importance to the Wakefield district.
Culture & Context
The Big Blade is part of Australia's tradition of Big Things — large novelty structures built to attract travellers and celebrate local industry. It reflects Snowtown's identity as a wind energy hub and serves as a community symbol and roadside tourism icon for the Wakefield region.
