About Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary
Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary is a wetland ecosystem located on the backwaters of the Ujani Dam along the Bhima River in Maharashtra. Situated approximately 100 km from Pune on the Pune-Solapur Highway, it is renowned for hosting large flocks of Greater Flamingos and over 230 species of migratory birds during winter. The sanctuary comprises shallow water bodies and mudflats that provide critical feeding grounds for avian wildlife, making it a significant birdwatching destination often referred to as the Mini Bharatpur of Maharashtra.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect guided boat safaris on the Ujani Dam backwaters to observe aquatic birds like flamingos, painted storks, and bar-headed geese in their natural habitat. Birdwatching spots are located 5-10 km from the main town in villages like Diksal and Kumbhargaon, requiring local transport or arranged pickups. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best lighting and bird activity. Facilities are basic, with modest homestays and local fish thali available, but no formal visitor center or entry gate exists at the sanctuary itself.
