History of Bentong Old Town
Bentong developed in the late 19th century as a tin-mining settlement. Chinese miners and merchants established the town centre along the Bentong River, building shophouses that form today's Old Town. The architecture from the early 1900s reflects Straits Chinese shophouse design and the town's transition from mining to an agricultural trading centre for rubber, ginger and durian.
Culture & Context
The Old Town reflects Bentong's Chinese heritage and multicultural community, with traditional kopitiams, clan associations and temples. It is known for culinary heritage centred on Bentong ginger, Musang King durian and artisanal soy sauce, and for street art that interprets local folklore and daily life, functioning as a centre for cultural preservation and food tourism.
