History of Bendigo Tramways
Bendigo's tramway began with battery trams in 1890, electrified in 1903 under the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and later operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria until public service closure in April 1972. The Bendigo Trust (now Bendigo Heritage Attractions) preserved the depot, tracks and fleet as a tourist tramway, maintaining continuous tram operation and establishing a workshop for heritage tram restoration.
Culture & Context
Represents Bendigo's gold-rush era urban growth and 20th-century public transport heritage. As a living museum and volunteer-supported heritage operation, it preserves tramway craftsmanship, interprets local history through narrated tours, and forms part of Bendigo's heritage tourism precinct with the Central Deborah Gold Mine.
