History of Belgenny Farm
Belgenny Farm was established in 1805 on a 5,000-acre grant from Governor Philip Gidley King to John Macarthur at Camden Park. It became the centre of Macarthur's pioneering merino sheep breeding program with Elizabeth Macarthur, laying the foundation for Australia's wool industry. The surviving farm complex, largely built in the 1820s-1840s, includes some of Australia's earliest European farm buildings and demonstrates early colonial agricultural practices and estate farming.
Culture & Context
The farm is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and is recognised as a site of national agricultural heritage. It represents early European settlement, colonial farming traditions and the development of Australia's pastoral economy, and is maintained as an educational and community heritage site by the Belgenny Farm Trust.
