About Bateshwar Temple Complex
Bateshwar Temple Complex is a group of about 200 sandstone temples located in Bateshwar village, Morena district, Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Chambal River. Built between the 8th and 10th centuries during the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, the complex is dedicated mainly to Shiva and Vishnu. Restored by the Archaeological Survey of India, it is notable for its Nagara-style architecture and ravine landscape.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a sprawling archaeological complex of around 200 small to medium sandstone temples spread across a sloping ravine site near the Chambal River. Most shrines are simple Nagara-style structures with shikharas, mandapas and lingams, many restored from ruins. The site is open and arid with sandy paths, scattered temple clusters, and views of the Chambal ravines. Visitors can walk between temple groups, observe intricate carvings, and see ongoing conservation work.

History of Bateshwar Temple Complex
The temples were constructed between the 8th and 10th centuries CE under the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. The site fell into ruin and was covered by ravine debris before systematic restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India from 2005 onwards under archaeologist K.K. Muhammed, who reassembled collapsed temples using original stone blocks.
Culture & Context
The complex is a significant Hindu religious site dedicated primarily to Shiva, with temples also dedicated to Vishnu and Devi. It is known as Bateshwar Mahadev and is associated with Shaivite worship. The annual Bateshwar Fair held nearby reflects its continued religious importance.
