History of Basava Sagara Dam
Basava Sagara Dam was constructed across the Krishna River as part of the Upper Krishna Project. Foundation work began in 1956 and the dam was completed in 1982. It was named after Basavanna, the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer of Karnataka. The project was developed to provide irrigation to drought-prone areas of North Karnataka and to generate hydroelectric power.
Culture & Context
The dam is named in honour of Basavanna (Basaveshwara), a revered 12th-century philosopher and founder of the Lingayat tradition, reflecting regional cultural identity. The reservoir and its canals support agriculture and livelihoods in Yadgir, Vijayapura, Raichur and Bagalkot districts, making it culturally and economically significant for North Karnataka.
