History of Barua Sagar Lake
Barua Sagar Lake was constructed as a major water reservoir by Raja Udit Singh of Orchha in the early 18th century, commonly dated to around 1690-1744, to address water scarcity in the Bundelkhand region. The large earthen and stone embankment was an important feat of Bundela water management. The adjacent Barua Sagar Fort, built around the same period, was strategically positioned to overlook and protect the lake and embankment.
Culture & Context
The lake has long served as a vital water source for drinking, irrigation and daily use for Barua Sagar town and surrounding villages. It remains a central community leisure space and picnic destination, and its association with Bundela heritage and the overlooking fort gives it cultural importance in the Jhansi-Orchha region.
