History of Bardhaman Rajbati
Bardhaman Rajbati was the palace of the Bardhaman Raj zamindari, one of the largest zamindaris in Bengal. The present palace complex was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century, notably under Maharaja Bijay Chand Mahatab (reigned 1887-1941). After the abolition of zamindari, the palace was handed over in 1960 to establish the University of Burdwan, which continues to use it as its administrative headquarters.
Culture & Context
The Rajbati is a symbol of the cultural and architectural heritage of Bardhaman and the legacy of the Bardhaman Raj family. It represents the Indo-European palace architecture patronized by Bengal zamindars during the British period and remains a central cultural landmark associated with the educational heritage of the University of Burdwan.
