About Baratang Mud Volcano
Baratang Mud Volcano is a natural geological formation on Baratang Island in North and Middle Andaman district, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Recognized as the only active mud volcano site in India, it is formed by natural gases emitted from decaying organic matter underground pushing mud to the surface. The site features small bubbling mud cones in a forested clearing and is reached via a short walk after traveling from Port Blair through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a small cleared area in tropical forest containing low mud cones and craters that intermittently bubble and ooze grey mud due to natural gas pressure. The landscape is barren around the cones contrasted with dense forest surroundings. Access involves a short walk on an unpaved path from the parking area. There are no large structures; the experience is focused on observing the geological phenomenon, photography, and guided explanation of its formation.
