History of Baranagar Math
Baranagar Math was established in October 1886 shortly after the mahasamadhi of Sri Ramakrishna at Cossipore. Led by Narendranath Dutta (later Swami Vivekananda), his brother disciples gathered in a dilapidated house at Baranagar and took informal monastic vows, forming the first Ramakrishna Math. It functioned as the headquarters of the nascent Ramakrishna Order until 1892 before shifting to Alambazar Math.
Culture & Context
The Math is regarded as the cradle of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement and holds deep religious significance for followers of Sri Ramakrishna. It represents the beginning of organized monasticism in the Ramakrishna tradition and is a pilgrimage site associated with the spiritual ideals of renunciation, service and universal harmony propagated by Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
