History of Bara Kaman
Bara Kaman was commenced in 1672 by Ali Adil Shah II, the eighth ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, as his own mausoleum. It was planned as a grand structure with twelve arches (Bara Kaman means twelve arches) intended to surpass Gol Gumbaz in scale. Construction was halted after the ruler's death in 1672 and the subsequent decline of the Adil Shahi kingdom, leaving the mausoleum incomplete with only the arches and walls completed and no dome ever built.
Culture & Context
Bara Kaman represents the final major architectural undertaking of the Adil Shahi period and showcases the Indo-Islamic architectural style developed in the Deccan. Its twelve-arch design and large scale reflect the architectural ambitions of late Adil Shahi art. The monument is a protected heritage structure and an important cultural landmark of Vijayapura's historic urban landscape.
