Avvaiyar Statue

The Avvaiyar Statue is an outdoor monument located on the promenade of Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It honors Avvaiyar, the revered Tamil poet and moral philosopher known for works like Aathichoodi. Installed as part of a series of statues of Tamil luminaries along Marina Beach, it is a notable cultural landmark and photo stop for visitors walking the beachfront.

Visitors can expect an open-air bronze statue of the poet Avvaiyar set on a pedestal along the paved Marina Beach promenade facing the Bay of Bengal. The statue stands among a line of statues of Tamil scholars and leaders. The setting is an urban beachfront with sea views, pedestrian walkway, vendors and crowds, especially in the evenings. No enclosure or ticketed entry; viewing is from the promenade.

The statue honors Avvaiyar, the celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher traditionally associated with Sangam and later Tamil literature and known for didactic works such as Aathichoodi and Kondrai Vendhan. The Marina Beach statues, including Avvaiyar, were installed in 1968 during the government of C. N. Annadurai to commemorate Tamil literary and cultural icons along the beachfront.

The statue commemorates Avvaiyar's enduring contribution to Tamil language, literature and moral education. It serves as a cultural landmark celebrating Tamil heritage and is part of Chennai's identity as a center for Tamil culture, visited by locals and tourists paying respect to the poet's legacy.
