History of Anand Bhavan
Anand Bhavan was constructed in 1930 by Motilal Nehru to serve as the new family residence after donating the original Anand Bhavan (now Swaraj Bhavan) to the Indian National Congress. It served as the residence of Jawaharlal Nehru and was the birthplace of Indira Gandhi in 1917 at the old building. In 1970, Indira Gandhi donated the building to the nation. It now functions as a museum preserving artifacts related to the Nehru family and the independence movement era.
Culture & Context
The site is preserved as a memorial to the Nehru family and their role in modern Indian history. It houses a library, memorabilia and exhibits that reflect early 20th-century cultural and political life in Allahabad (Prayagraj) and is an important educational and heritage attraction for visitors interested in India's modern history.
