It is one of several large sagars (lakes) commissioned by Tripura rulers around Udaipur.

Temples on its banks, particularly the Mahadev Temple, are places of local worship and attract devotees, especially during festivals. The lake is traditionally linked with the heritage of the Manikya dynasty and the pilgrimage circuit centred on the Tripura Sundari Temple.
