History of Alorna Fort
Constructed in the 17th century by the Bhonsles of Sawantwadi to defend against Maratha attacks and guard northern trade routes. Captured by Portuguese Viceroy Dom Luís Carlos Inácio Xavier de Meneses (Marquis of Alorna) in 1746, who rebuilt and renamed it Santa Cruz de Alorna. Briefly returned to Bhonsle control in 1761 before being recaptured by Dom Frederico Guilhermo de Souza in 1781. Served as an 18th-century border stronghold between Goa and Sawantwadi.
