History of Albert Centre Market & Food Centre
The centre was built to resettle hawkers and market vendors from the former Albert Street Market and surrounding street hawking areas in the Bugis-Rochor district. Albert Street was once a prominent street market area before urban redevelopment in the 1980s, and the current Albert Centre Market & Food Centre continues that market heritage in a purpose-built facility managed by the National Environment Agency.
Culture & Context
The food centre is part of Singapore's hawker culture, recognised on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It serves as a community dining space where diverse local cuisines are preserved and shared at affordable prices, reflecting everyday food heritage in central Singapore.
